Traffic Safety Week in Nevada

October 12–17, 2026 • 12:00 AM – 12:00 AM PT

Proclamation

WHEREAS, the ability to travel safely on Nevada's streets and highways is essential to the health, economy, and quality of life of all Nevadans; and

WHEREAS, traffic crashes remain one of the leading causes of preventable death and injury in the State of Nevada, with most resulting from dangerous driving behaviors that are entirely avoidable; and

WHEREAS, impaired driving, whether by alcohol and/or drugs, continues to claim lives on Nevada roadways each year, and every impaired-driving fatality is a preventable tragedy; and

WHEREAS, distracted driving, including cell phone use and other diversions of attention behind the wheel, endangers drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists, and staying focused on the road is one of the simplest ways to prevent crashes; and

WHEREAS, seat belts are the most effective tool for reducing the risk of death and serious injury in a crash, yet many Nevadans still travel unbuckled, putting themselves and others at unnecessary risk; and

WHEREAS, speeding and lane departures reduce a driver's ability to react to changing road conditions and remain persistent contributing factors in fatal and serious-injury collisions statewide; and

WHEREAS, intersections are among the most common locations for serious crashes in Nevada, and stopping fully on red and yielding appropriately are critical to protecting all roadway users; and

WHEREAS, pedestrians are among the most vulnerable roadway users, and all drivers share a responsibility to remain alert for pedestrians, yield the right-of-way when required, and help ensure Nevada's streets are safe for those on foot; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the NVACTS Traffic Safety Committee, law enforcement agencies, safety advocates, and communities statewide, is committed to changing unsafe driving behaviors through education, enforcement, and public awareness, with the goal of ensuring every Nevadan reaches their destination safely;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim the week of October 12-18, 2026, as
