Safe Digging Day in Nevada

WHEREAS, Nevada's underground infrastructure including natural gas, electric, water, sewer, telecommunications, and other utility lines is essential to the health, safety, and well-being of our residents, businesses, and communities; and

WHEREAS, damage to underground utilities can result in serious injuries, service disruptions, environmental harm, and costly repairs that affect individuals and communities throughout the State of Nevada; and


WHEREAS, every digging project whether installing a fence, planting a tree, building a deck, or undertaking a larger construction project has the potential to strike buried utility lines if proper precautions are not taken; and


WHEREAS, contacting 811 before digging is a free, simple, and effective step that allows utility operators to mark the approximate location of underground facilities, helping to prevent accidents and protect workers, homeowners, and the public; and


WHEREAS, the national "Call Before You Dig" system has helped reduce excavation-related damage through public awareness, education, and collaboration among homeowners, contractors, utility operators, and local governments; and


WHEREAS, observing Safe Digging Day on August 11 serves as a meaningful reminder to all Nevadans to remember to Call 811 Before You Dig, to practice safe excavation, and to work together to protect our communities, critical infrastructure, and the dedicated professionals who build and maintain the systems that serve our state;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim August 11, 2026, as

SAFE DIGGING DAY IN NEVADA
