Juneteenth Independence Day In Nevada

WHEREAS, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued January 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln; and

WHEREAS, in 1948, President Truman signed National Freedom Day in honor of the Emancipation Proclamation; and

WHEREAS, the 13th Amendment was ratified in Nevada on February 16, 1865; and

WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day freedom was proclaimed to those enslaved in Galveston, Texas, by issuance of General Order #3, and enforced by the United States Colored Troops; and

WHEREAS, the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation was instrumental in obtaining the Title 5 holiday for Juneteenth National Freedom Day in 2021; and

WHEREAS, the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation Nevada was instrumental in obtaining Juneteenth Day of observance in 2011, followed by the state holiday in 2023; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOE LOMBARDO, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEVADA, do hereby proclaim June 19, 2026, as

JUNETEENTH INDEPENDENCE DAY IN NEVADA
